customer‑facing digital platform in company history
A freight‑rail operator’s first customer‑facing digital platform
- Challenge —
- Genesee & Wyoming had never offered customers a digital front door. Core revenue streams like railcar auctions ran on fax and email, real‑estate applications lived in a system with a security gap, and customers had asked for years for visibility into their own data.
- Approach —
- As lead architect, lead developer, and UI lead, I designed and built the company’s first customer‑facing portal on Azure — automating and gamifying the railcar auction process, migrating real‑estate applications off the vulnerable legacy system, and embedding self‑service Power BI reporting.
- Outcome —
- Reduced errors and freed up customer‑rep time, increased bidding activity, closed a security vulnerability found in penetration testing, and finally gave customers the self‑service reporting they’d long requested — while opening new cross‑sell opportunities across the portal.
